Optometric Intern

Optometry Office Assistant

We have an opening at our optometry office from now through Summer 2027 (longer commitments are welcome). We are ideally seeking a pre-optometry or pre-med student taking a gap year who can commit to at least one full school year. This position is currently held by a UC Berkeley graduate who has been accepted to optometry school, making it an excellent opportunity for students interested in healthcare and optometry.

Responsibilities include:

  • Pre-testing and working up patients

  • Performing basic optometric testing

  • Assisting with glasses and contact lenses

  • All training will be provided

  • Opportunity to shadow the optometrist in clinic and learn the behind-the-scenes aspects of private practice

Position details: 

  • Part-time

  • Preferably later hours in the day (flexible)

  • 3–5 days per week (flexible)

  • Approximately 15–20 hours per week (flexible)

Fall Conference

Fall conference 2025 is back! This event is perfect for learning more about optometry, preparing to apply for optometry school, or figuring out if optometry is the right fit for you. 
 
This year, we’ll be hosting various presentations and panels ranging from a Q&A with current optometry students, UC Berkeley School of Optometry admissions tips & tricks, an alumni panel with professionals in different fields of optometry, a tour of our facilities and demonstration in our Pre Clinic. Fall Conference 2025 will be FULLY in-person!
 
Attend our conference this year on October 11th from 9:30AM – 4:30PM (PST) at UC Berkeley’s Minor Hall! Non Berkeley Foresight members do pay a small $5 fee for attending. This helps cover costs for materials and food for you.

Optometric Assitant

We are open Mon, Tues, Thursday, Friday 9am-5pm, Wednesday 10am-6pm. We are closed 1:15pm-2pm for lunch. We are closed the 1st Fridays of the month.

Your duties include:
-answer phone calls
-verifying insurance coverages
-scheduling appointments
-checking in patients
-pre-testing patients
-helping patients select frame and lens options
-pricing out exam, contact lenses and Glasses order
-frame adjustment
-submitting claims (medical/vision)
-check in contact lenses, and glasses
-troubleshoot glasses if not correct
-assist the optometrist

We are seeking a motivated and personable Optometric Assistant to join our friendly optometry practice inside the Danville Costco. This is an excellent opportunity for pre-optometry, pre-med, or other pre-health students looking to gain hands-on clinical and patient-care experience in a private practice setting.

About the Role

As an Optometric Assistant, you will play a key role in patient care and office operations. You will work directly with patients and the doctor, gaining exposure to both clinical and administrative aspects of optometry.

Responsibilities

  • Greet and assist patients with professionalism and warmth

  • Prepare and maintain patient charts and records

  • Perform automated pre-testing (training provided)

  • Schedule and confirm patient appointments

  • Answer incoming phone calls and address patient inquiries

  • Verify and authorize vision and medical insurance

  • Assist with basic medical billing and bookkeeping tasks (training provided)

  • Maintain organized filing systems and office workflow

  • Support daily office operations and light housekeeping tasks

Qualifications

  • Previous experience in office administration 

  • Retail sales and/or customer service experience preferred

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced environment

  • Optical or medical office experience is a plus, but not required

Minimum Requirements

  • Availability Fridays (9:00 AM – 5:00 PM) and one additional weekday

  • Possible availability on Saturday or Sunday

  • Commitment to a part-time schedule

What is the East Bay Center for the Blind: Established in 1939, The East Bay Center for the Blind, Inc. is an innovative, grassroots, nonprofit organization that seeks to empower blind and visually impaired individuals underserved by traditional agencies. We strive to actively facilitate independence, confidence, dignity and self-growth in our community.

Your Role as a Volunteer:

  • Assist with clerical tasks (such as reading letters, organizing files, and other computer work)
  • Using your visual senses! (such as locating items, helping out during classes, etc)
  • Provide support for community outings and events (set-up/clean-up, sighted guide for walks and outing activities)
  • Provide technical assistance (ie: data entry, website development, research)
